Apparently Conflicting Reports

Some apparently conflicting reports are coming out of the IMB Board of Trustees meeting in Tampa this week. See...

Wade Burleson on Grace and Truth to You

Marty Duren on SBC Outpost

and Art Rogers on 12 Witnesses

and compare it to what Rick Thompson (who has voiced public support for Wade Burleson and his views) has to say on The Road We Travel.

Personally, I am a bit confused. I don't want to rush to judgment. I think I have already made known my personal views on the Board of Trustees decisions in November, 2005 and January, 2006. However, I don't want to say anything about the news coming out of Tampa now, until I feel I have the whole story.

  1. I am very confused as well. The reports don't seem to be lining up.

But it does concern me that Dr. Rankin was treated in such a manner. I just admire him for his resolve to stand strong and yet be Christlike.

We need to just keep praying fervently for our denomination and our leaders.

  2. David,
I was confused also, but after reading Rick's revised post, I am less confused now.
By the way, I really appreciated your Dad.

  3. David,

Wade and Rick are prohibited from saying anything negative about the IMB and what is going on there by the new policy.

Marty didn't know Wade was prohibited from serving on any committees until I called him and told him. He was standing next to Wade at the time. I think Dr. B received some ribbing that marty got the news from me in Kentucky while he was standing at the meeting.

  4. I was a bit confused too. Maybe Rick thinks the censoring is good for those who are publically criticizing our President of the IMB. Too bad that most of them are not on the BoT but just influence the BoT.

  5. Dear David,

I would like to understand the discrepancy, also. I know that passions are running high right now, but how can Rick's version of what happened be so different from Marty's and Dr. B's?

    Love in Christ,

    Jeff

  6. You're not the only confused M out there. This is crazy!

  7. David,

I hope the whole story is better than the "bits & pieces" we are now getting, but think that it will actually be worse than we had ever imagined.

Based on both Wade Burleson's and Marty Duryen's (sp?) blogs, and the treatment of Dr. Rankin, it looks like deja vu all over again. What happened to Keith Parks when the trustees started attacking him? Ditto Russel Dilday and others...are Dr. Rankin's days numbered?

And just when I thought it could not get worse, events surprize me by getting worse.

  8. David,
I'm with you. I was pretty agitated yesterday. Today, I'm in a take-a-breath-and-wait-for-the-full-story mode (state of mind?). There were 20 or so non-trustees in attendance. They were excluded from any executive sessions. But they observed a lot, and they have total freedom to say whatever they want to say.

I don't believe reality can only always be positive. So I'm leery about the newly adopted "Trustee Responsibilities" policy/guideline. But I'm waiting for more information, primarily from non-trustees.

  9. Anonymous,

I decided to delete your comment. I would love to talk with you about your suggestion further, but I just don't think this is probably the appropriate forum right now. If there were any way for you to send me an e-mail with a return address, I would love to write you back.

  10. Elizabeth,

I have the same concern that you have about the trustees eventually deciding to conduct all substantive business in executive session.
