Clarification

On one version of the press release announcing my nomination as Vice-President of the SBC, erroneously sent out to Baptist Press and other news agencies, there is a line that states:
During his service with the International Mission Board, Rogers has worked to plant numerous Baptist churches in one of the most culturally, ethnically, and religiously diverse mission fields, Dykes noted.
The correct, updated version of the press release reads:
During his service with the International Mission Board, Rogers has focused his evangelistic efforts to plant new Baptist churches in one of the most culturally, ethnically, and religiously diverse mission fields, Dykes noted.
Actually, during our time in Spain, I have had the privilege of being church planting team leader for one actual church start, in the city of Mérida. My wife and I have also had the joy to serve in various support roles related to several other church starts, and encouraged and abetted church planting ministry through various other means during our tenure in Spain.

Just wanted to make that clear, so we weren't getting credit for more than what has actually been accomplished.

I rejoice to know that you'll be in San Antonio. I hope this means that we'll finally get to meet face-to-face.

In Christ,
Bart

David,

Thanks for the clarification and integrity.

Congratulations on the nomination. I am glad that you are willing to do this. You are headed into a hornet's nest. You will need some tough skin and a lot of grace. Will be praying for you. Hang in there, you can make a difference.

I look forward to seeing you sometime while stateside.

God's speed David. I am glad you will be there. I truly hope that you will be elected and that event will be a catalyst for refocusing our convention on missions around the world.

David,

I read elsewhere that you do not intend to come to San Antonio to stand for election. Is this true?

Bart Barber said...

That is, not that you do not plan to be nominated, but that you do not plan to be present when nominated...

Hmm -

I wonder ... do you have to be present to win? :)

I am praying for you David, and I personally do hope you will be elected to represent our convention in the 1st V.P. position at the meeting next week.

Bart,

The possibility of allowing myself to be nominated caught me totally by surprise. As a result, circumstances related to ministry and family commitments on here in Spain will not allow me to be present at the time of the election. Specifically, for example, my son is graduating from High School, and my mother and in-laws are in town during the week of the Convention. I regret that this is the case, as I would very much like to be there to join in on this important occasion. But I must submit to what I consider to be the sovereign determination of God regarding the timing of these circumstances.

I guess we won't get to meet face-to-face in San Antonio. :-(

Well...someday (here or beyond).

David Rogers said...

Bart,

I hope and trust it will be sometime soon during the upcoming year while we are Stateside.

I think it is great that a missionarty is being nominated. As S. Baptists missions is our theme, and what better person to bring into the picture than an active, on-site missionary. If I was in SA you'd get my vote!

David,

I am so excited for you. I am a member of Bellevue and while I have never met you in person, I feel like I know you due to the pride with which your father spoke of you. We sure do miss him! One of my favorite sermons mentioned you in that your dad has to dial certain numbers in order to reach you in Spain - the point of the message was Jesus was part of this tribe, this lineage that we are all a part of. I know I'm not doing the sermon justice, but I still have the notes somewhere! :)

I pray for your mom and family all the time and I hope you are elected the SBC!

Geoff,

We will be in the Memphis area, in Cordova. I'd love to be able to spend some time with you.

Send me an e-mail at loveeachstone@gmail.com, and we can try to set it up.

Mr. Rogers,
I am a student going to the convention and I am trying to get a handle on what's happening. I've read up on you a little. However, I would like to know how you feel about the resurgence of Calvinism in the convention.

David Rogers said...

Anonymous,

RE: My personal beliefs on Calvinism, see here

RE: How I believe we as Southern Baptists should respond to the resurgence of Calvinism in the convention...

"Traditionally, Southern Baptists have chosen not to divide over the issue of 'degrees of Calvinism.' While affirming the right of those on all sides of this issue to maintain their personal convictions, I am not in favor of those on any side imposing their particular point of view as a criterion for cooperation among us in missions and evangelism."

I think that if each messenger to the SBC in San Antonio had read this series of comments that David would have done a lot better in the voting.

The exchanges between Jerry C and David were most depressing. The basis of those exchanges is likely the reason that a large number of new Baptist churches in my area are very quietly Baptist. You could attend them for quite a while before you discovered their "Baptistic" nature unless you determinedly inquired--and they certainly don't put it on the sign.

Best wishes to us all, but as an organization the SBC is violating the first rules of holes...stop digging.
